Volvo Service & Repair in Glenolden, PA | Briarcliffe Auto Service

Volvo owners tend to keep their cars for a very long time. We regularly see XC90s and V70 wagons with two or three hundred thousand miles still carrying families around Delaware County, alongside newer XC60s and S60s that look like they rolled out of a design studio. Safety drew a lot of these owners to the brand. Durability is why they stay.

Getting that kind of mileage out of a Volvo takes a mechanic who knows its quirks, and the quirks depend heavily on which Volvo you drive. A 2006 XC70 and a 2022 XC60 share a badge, but they have very different engines, electronics, and weak spots.

Our shop on Ashland Avenue has worked on Volvos since the boxy 240 wagon was a common sight, and we've kept up with each generation since. When you bring yours in, we already know which problems to look for on your model year.

Five-Cylinder Volvos (Roughly 1999 to 2016)

The five-cylinder turbo engine in the S60, V70, XC70, and first-generation XC90 is a durable engine, but it has a few well-known habits.

Clogged PCV System and Oil Leaks The crankcase ventilation system on these engines, often called the oil trap or flame trap, clogs over time. When it does, pressure builds up inside the engine and pushes oil out through the seals. A whistling sound at idle, oil leaks around the cam seals or rear main seal, or a dipstick that pops up are classic signs. Replacing the PCV system early is far cheaper than the seal repairs that follow if you don't. Our engine diagnostics confirm whether that's the cause of your leak.

Timing Belt Service The five-cylinder uses a timing belt, and it needs replacing on a set schedule, typically around 105,000 miles or ten years, whichever comes first. This is one service you can't put off. We handle it as part of a major tune-up, usually along with the water pump and tensioners.

AWD Angle Gear Wear All-wheel-drive versions send power through an angle gear that wears out with age and neglected fluid, often starting with a whine or a leak. The rear coupling also needs periodic fluid and filter service. Matching tire tread depth matters on these cars too, since mismatched tires put extra strain on the AWD system.

Four-Cylinder Drive-E Volvos (2015 to Today)

Volvo's current lineup runs on 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, turbocharged and in some models supercharged or paired with a plug-in hybrid system.

Oil Consumption Some Drive-E engines from the mid-to-late 2010s developed a reputation for burning oil, often traced to piston ring wear. If your XC60, XC90, S60, or V60 keeps asking for a quart between services, keep a close eye on the level and have it evaluated before it becomes a bigger problem.

Electronic Parking Brake and Brake Service Newer Volvos use an electronic parking brake. The rear calipers have to be retracted with a scan tool before the pads can be replaced, which rules out a basic brake shop. Our brake service includes that step. Heavier models like the XC90 also go through pads and rotors faster than many owners expect.

Infotainment and Electrical Glitches From the Sensus system to the newer Google-based displays, Volvo's large touchscreens run many of the car's functions, and they have their share of freezes, reboots, and misbehaving sensors. On older models, clogged sunroof drains can let water into the cabin and damage electronics under the carpet. Our electrical diagnostics find the root cause.

The "Lifetime Fluid" Myth

Many Volvos left the factory with transmission fluid described as lifetime fill. In real Delaware County driving, with stop-and-go traffic on MacDade Boulevard and hot summers, that fluid breaks down, and shift quality suffers along with it. Harsh shifts, flaring between gears, or a clunk into drive are common signs on higher-mileage Volvos. A proper fluid exchange through our transmission service often restores smoother shifting and helps the transmission last longer.

Keeping Your Volvo on the Road Without the Dealer Bill

Volvo owners appreciate careful engineering, and they deserve the same care when it comes to service. As a family-run shop, we give you a clear explanation of what your Volvo needs, what can wait, and what it costs, with none of the dealer overhead built into the price.

Volvo also has a less obvious connection to brands we service every day. During the years Ford owned Volvo, the S40, V50, and C30 were built on the same platform as the Mazda3 and Ford Focus, and several Volvos shared components with Ford and Mazda models. That shared history makes parts sourcing and diagnosis more straightforward on those model years.

The shop is on W Ashland Avenue in Glenolden, a short drive from MacDade Boulevard and I-95. Volvo owners come to us from Secane, Swarthmore, Springfield, Media, and across Delaware County.
