Honda Service & Repair in

Glenolden, PA | Briarcliffe Auto Service

Honda earned its reputation the old-fashioned way, by building cars that start every morning and keep running for years without drama. Since entering the American market in the 1970s, Honda has become one of the most popular brands on the road for good reason. Models like the Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Pilot consistently rank among the most reliable vehicles you can buy, and it's not unusual to see Hondas with 200,000 or even 300,000 miles still making their daily commute.

That reliability doesn't mean Hondas are maintenance-free, though. These vehicles still need regular service, and when problems do develop, you want a shop that knows Honda engineering inside and out. We work on Hondas alongside other popular brands like Hyundai that fill the same driveways across Delaware County, so we understand the vehicles our neighbors actually drive. The good news is that Hondas are straightforward to work on when you have the right knowledge and diagnostic equipment. The bad news is that skipping routine maintenance on a Honda catches up with you eventually, just like any other vehicle.

Briarcliffe Auto Service has been a fixture in the Glenolden community since 1987, and Hondas have always been among the most frequent vehicles in our service bays. Our technicians know these cars and SUVs extremely well and can handle everything from scheduled maintenance to the repairs that pop up at higher mileage.

What Typically Goes Wrong With Hondas

Hondas are dependable, but they aren't bulletproof. Certain issues appear consistently across the lineup, and knowing what to watch for can save you money and headaches down the road. Here's what Honda owners bring to us most often:

Automatic Transmission Failures This is the big one. Honda's automatic transmissions, particularly in 1999-2004 Accords, Odysseys, and early MDX models, have a well-documented history of premature failure. Symptoms start with slipping, harsh engagement between gears, and delayed shifts before eventually leading to complete failure. Later models improved significantly, but the 5-speed automatics in mid-2000s vehicles can still develop torque converter shudder and solenoid problems. Keeping transmission fluid fresh with regular drain-and-fill services, not flushes, is the single best thing you can do to extend transmission life on any Honda. If your Honda is experiencing transmission trouble, bring it in for our transmission diagnostics service, and we'll get to the bottom of it.

AC Compressor and Condenser Problems Honda air conditioning systems are effective when they work, but compressor failures and condenser leaks are common as these vehicles age. The Civic and CR-V are especially prone to losing refrigerant through pinholes in the condenser caused by road debris. A system that blows cool but not cold, or cycles on and off frequently, usually points to a slow leak or a compressor on its way out. Getting your AC and heater system inspected and serviced at the first sign of trouble beats sweating through a Pennsylvania summer.

Engine Block and Head Gasket Concerns Certain Honda engines have known vulnerabilities. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine found in newer Civic, CR-V, and Accord models has faced reports of fuel diluting the engine oil, particularly in cold climates and during short trips where the engine doesn't reach full operating temperature. Older Civics with the D-series engines can develop cracked blocks, while some Accord V6 engines experience head gasket weep at higher mileage. Regular oil analysis and paying attention to oil level and condition between changes help catch these problems before they escalate.

Power Steering Pump Noise and Failure A groaning or whining noise when turning the wheel is a familiar complaint from Honda owners, especially in Accords and CR-Vs from the mid-2000s through early 2010s. The power steering pump gradually wears internally and becomes louder over time. Left alone, the pump eventually fails completely, making steering difficult. Replacing the pump and flushing the system with fresh fluid resolves the issue and prevents damage to the steering rack.
