Around Delaware County you'll find everything from high-school-graduation Jettas to well-kept Passat TDIs that owners refuse to part with.


What keeps a VW on the road is a little different from what keeps a Honda or Toyota going. Volkswagens reward owners who follow the maintenance schedule closely and punish those who don't. Many of the most expensive VW repairs we see started as a skipped fluid change or a small leak someone decided to watch.

Where Volkswagens Tend to Break


Timing Chain Tensioner on the 2.0T The 2.0-liter turbo in many 2008 to 2012 GTIs, Jettas, Passats, CCs, and Tiguans used a timing chain tensioner with a well-known failure pattern. The warning is usually a brief rattle for a few seconds on a cold start. If the tensioner gives out, the chain can jump and cause major engine damage, so that rattle calls for an engine inspection right away, not at your next oil change.


Water Pump and Thermostat Housing Leaks Newer VW engines use a plastic water pump and thermostat assembly that often leaks as it ages. You'll notice a sweet smell after driving, a low coolant warning, or pink residue on the passenger side of the engine. It's one of the most common repairs we do on 2015-and-newer Jettas, GTIs, Tiguans, and Atlases.


Ignition Coils and Misfires A flashing check engine light and a shaky idle on a VW often point to a failed ignition coil. Coils and spark plugs work hard in turbocharged engines, which is why replacing plugs on schedule during a tune-up matters more on a VW than on many other cars. An unresolved misfire will also fail your PA emissions test.


Carbon on the Intake Valves Direct-injected TSI and older FSI engines don't wash fuel over the intake valves, so carbon builds up over time. Rough running, hesitation, and lost power at higher mileage are the usual signs, and cleaning the valves brings the engine back.


Window Regulators and Electrical Quirks Older Jettas, Golfs, and Passats are known for window regulators that fail, sometimes dropping the glass into the door. Newer models have their share of sensor and module glitches. Our electrical diagnostics find the actual cause instead of throwing parts at the problem.


The VW Service Items People Forget


Most VW trouble we see traces back to one of three overlooked maintenance items:


DSG Fluid Service Volkswagen's dual-clutch DSG transmission shifts beautifully, but many versions need a fluid and filter change about every 40,000 miles. Owners who skip it can end up with rough low-speed shifts, shudder, and eventually expensive clutch or mechatronic repairs. Our transmission service handles DSG fluid changes properly, including the temperature-specific fill these units require.


The Right Oil, Not Just Any Oil VW engines are built around oils that meet Volkswagen's own approval standards, such as VW 502 00 or 508 00, depending on the engine. The quick-lube special may not meet that spec. Every oil change we do on a Volkswagen uses oil that matches the approval listed for your engine.


Coolant Checks Given how common water pump leaks are, a quick coolant level check between services is cheap insurance against an overheated engine.


Still Driving a TDI?


A lot of Delco drivers held onto their Jetta, Golf, and Passat TDIs, and for good reason. These diesels can run for a very long time. They also have their own needs. Diesel particulate filters clog up on cars that only make short trips, and later models rely on diesel exhaust fluid and emissions components that need attention as they age. If your TDI is throwing emissions warnings or dropping into reduced power, we'll diagnose it and tell you honestly what it will take to keep it running.
